The Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO is a high-definition live production switcher that integrates a professional broadcast control panel with a powerful internal recording engine. While it shares the same physical layout and core features as the standard HD8, the ISO version is specifically engineered for high-end post-production workflows, offering the ability to record every single camera input as an independent video file.

Full Isolated (ISO) Recording Engine

The hallmark feature of the HD8 ISO is its comprehensive recording capability. In a standard live production, you are typically limited to recording the "Program" feed—the final cut that the audience sees. The HD8 ISO, however, records all eight SDI inputs simultaneously.

Each input is captured as a separate H.264 video file with perfectly synchronized timecode. This is a massive advantage for creators who want to "perfect" their live show after the event is over. If a director missed a better shot on Camera 4 or if there was a technical glitch during a transition, the editor has access to every single angle to make corrections.

DaVinci Resolve Integration

To streamline the move from live production to post-production, the HD8 ISO automatically creates a DaVinci Resolve project file (.drp) alongside its video recordings. When you open this file in DaVinci Resolve, the entire live-switched show appears on a timeline exactly as it happened.

You can instantly swap shots, adjust audio levels using the Fairlight page, or apply professional color grading to the individual camera feeds. For high-end productions, this workflow even supports Blackmagic RAW files. If you are using Blackmagic Studio or URSA cameras, you can link the low-bandwidth ISO files to the high-quality RAW files recorded in-camera for a cinematic finish.

Professional Control Surface

The HD8 ISO is not just a switcher; it is a tactile control panel designed for speed and reliability.

  • Broadcast Buttons: The panel uses the same high-quality, tactile buttons found on expensive, full-scale broadcast switchers.

  • T-Bar Fader: A high-precision T-bar allows for smooth, manual control over dissolves and wipes.

  • Dedicated Audio Mixer: The top-left of the panel features a dedicated Fairlight audio control section with physical knobs and a bright LCD for real-time metering, EQ adjustment, and dynamics processing.

  • 3-Axis Joystick: Essential for quickly positioning Digital Video Effects (DVE), such as picture-in-picture boxes, during a live broadcast.

Standards-Converted 3G-SDI Inputs

One of the most user-friendly aspects of the HD8 ISO is that it features eight 3G-SDI inputs with full standards conversion. In live environments, you often deal with cameras or computers running at different frame rates or resolutions (e.g., 1080p, 1080i, or 720p). The HD8 ISO handles this automatically, scaling and converting every incoming signal to the switcher’s operating standard. This ensures that every source is "ready to air" the moment it is plugged in, without the need for external converter boxes.

Support for Remote Internet Cameras

Unique to the ISO model is the ability to integrate remote cameras via the internet. You can connect a Blackmagic Studio Camera or a smartphone running the Blackmagic Camera app from a completely different geographic location. The feed is sent to the switcher over the internet using SRT or RTMP protocols, appearing as one of the eight local inputs. This allows for global interviews or multi-site events where the cameras and the switcher are miles apart.

Streaming, Connectivity, and Redundancy

The unit features a built-in hardware streaming engine, allowing you to go live to YouTube, Facebook, or Twitch with a single button press. To ensure the broadcast never goes down, it supports mobile data tethering via USB-C. If your venue’s Ethernet fails, you can plug in a 5G phone to provide an instant internet backup.

For networking, the HD8 ISO includes a 4-port 10G Ethernet switch. This allows for ultra-fast file transfers and enables multiple users to access the recorded footage simultaneously via Blackmagic Cloud or local network storage.

Technical Specifications Summary

  • Inputs: 8x 3G-SDI with full standards conversion and re-sync.

  • Outputs: 1x Program, 2x Aux, 1x Multiview (SDI/HDMI).

  • Audio: 58-channel Fairlight mixer with MADI, XLR, and RCA inputs.

  • Keying: 4x Advanced Chroma Keyers, 2x Downstream Keyers, 1x SuperSource.

  • Graphics: Media pool for 20 stills and 400 frames of video (720p) or 200 frames (1080p).

One of the best Bat stories that I've read.
Format: Paperback
Coming off from The Long Halloween, Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale give us the sequel to their popular story tale in which we see Batman go at it with another year long mystery, while also giving us an origin story for the first Robin, Dick Grayson. After reading this book, I have come away having with even more love of the Dark Knight's mythology, while coming to see this as my favorite Batman story that I have read, even if it doesn't stand as well on its own. ON the narrative side of things, Loeb delivers a story fairly similar to the one he gave in The Long Halloween, though I feel this one is a bit more polished than Halloween was. Some have said that the retreading of plot structure have limited the way Loeb's later works are read, but I myself have no problem with it (for the most part), Loeb manages to do enough differently that you don't feel like you're reading the exact same story. The real big negative I'd have to give this graphic novel is that it really doesn't stand as well by itself than if you had read The Long Halloween. While I myself read that story before coming in to this one, I did see many connections that I would assume would through off any newcomers who hadn't read the prior story. But I will say that this is the story that had me invested the most emotionally. Without giving away any spoilers, that last page in the novel gave me such a cathartic experience that I really came to appreciate certain aspects of the Dark Knight's mythology, and how themes of loneliness were touched upon in a very genuine way. Looking at the art for the novel, Sale's work has improved much from The Long Halloween. I always mention in reviews concerning Sale that I was originally not a fan of his art, but after going through his work, you can't help but admire the level skill he manages to put in his drawings. There is a very big noir feeling in this novel (a plus for ) that is just delivered so well that any preferences in art I may have against Sale are put away in admiring the way he plays with lighting in the story. My biggest complaint for the art, which is a more of a personal thing really, is that I do not like the "pixie" costume they gave Robin (which is his default costume that many would associate him with). I have never really liked this costume, probably never will, but again, this is just me. Overall, I would say I really enjoyed the novel and would have to recommend it to any fans of the Batman (although I'd make sure you have read The Long Halloween first). This has come to be one of my most favorited Batman stories I've read, and I hope others will receive the same level of satisfaction that I have.

Great Sequel to Long Halloween
Format: Paperback
This takes all of the great elements of the Long Halloween and keeps it going. The two of those books together is a great story telling. Ticks all the boxes of a great Batman book. If you like this and Long Halloween check out The Penguin show on HBO Max. and if you like The Penguin but haven't read these two books you should since the show pulls a lot of influence from them.
