Blackmagic Design PYXIS 12K EF

The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 12K EF is a high-performance, modular digital cinema camera that integrates a massive 12K Large Format (LF) sensor into a versatile "box" form factor. This specific model features a native Canon EF mount, providing filmmakers with access to the world’s largest ecosystem of high-quality DSLR and cinema lenses, complete with full electronic control for focus and iris.

12K Large Format Sensor Technology

The PYXIS 12K EF is built around the advanced 36 x 24mm RGBW sensor, offering unparalleled resolution and color depth.

  • 12,288 x 8,192 Native Resolution: This ultra-high resolution allows for significant reframing, stabilization, and "virtual multi-cam" workflows in post-production without dropping below 4K quality.

  • Symmetrical Scaling: The sensor architecture allows for 12K, 8K, and 4K recording using the full sensor area, preserving the expansive large-format field of view and shallow depth of field across all resolutions.

  • RGBW Filter Array: By utilizing a specialized RGBW (Red, Green, Blue, White) pixel pattern, the camera delivers exceptional highlight recovery and superior performance in low-light environments.

Native EF Mount Advantages

The EF mount version of the PYXIS is the most versatile option for independent filmmakers and production houses.

  • Active Electronic Control: Supports electronic communication with EF-mount lenses, allowing for iris and focus adjustments directly from the camera’s touchscreen or via remote control.

  • Image Stabilization: Compatible with the internal Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) found in many EF lenses, which is vital for handheld and "run-and-gun" cinematography.

  • Lens Metadata: Automatically records lens data (focal length, aperture, and focus distance) into the Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) metadata, simplifying the post-production and VFX process.

Modular Rigging and "Box" Ergonomics

The PYXIS body is designed to be a flexible core for any rigging scenario:

  • Multiple Mounting Points: Each side of the camera features threaded holes for handles, cages, and side plates, allowing for easy transitions between tripods, gimbals, and drones.

  • Integrated Monitoring: Features a built-in 4-inch high-brightness HDR touchscreen for framing and menu control, angled for easy viewing while the camera is rigged.

  • Dual CFexpress Slots: To handle the massive data rates of 12K 10-bit recording, the camera utilizes dual CFexpress Type B card slots, alongside a USB-C expansion port for external SSD recording.

Advanced Cloud and Proxy Workflows

The PYXIS 12K EF is built for the "shoot-to-edit" generation:

  • Real-Time Proxy Generation: While recording full-resolution 12K BRAW, the camera simultaneously generates H.264 proxies.

  • Direct Cloud Upload: These proxies can be automatically uploaded to the Blackmagic Cloud via the built-in Ethernet port or a 5G/4G phone connection, allowing an editor across the globe to begin cutting the scene before the shoot is even over.

  • 12G-SDI and Professional I/O: Includes standard professional connections for monitoring, timecode, and high-speed data networking.

Operational Insight

The PYXIS 12K EF is perfect for users who want the elite image quality of the URSA Cine series but in a smaller, more modular footprint. Because the EF mount is so widely used, this camera can easily adapt to a variety of projects—from high-end commercial work using L-series glass to indie features utilizing vintage EF-mount cinema primes.

Professional Rigging Tip

When using the EF version of the PYXIS, take advantage of the active lens mount by using a wireless follow-focus system that integrates with the camera's internal protocols. This allows you to control focus wirelessly without the weight of external lens motors, keeping your gimbal or drone rig as light and balanced as possible.

not better than manual……!!!!!
Do Not Buy This Product. this review is coming at 1 April 2026. This can opener was purchased in October 2025. My initial review was that it worked well and did the job. It was meant to do however, after a few uses, I noticed that the can opener continue to move around and around the can even after the can lid had been cut open. in January 2026 it began to make more and more rotations around the can and the lid was not cut loose. After a few more uses. It just rotated and did nothing else. I sent an email to the company. I contacted Amazon about it. I’ve done everything that I can possibly see to do but I get no positive results. Consequently, I have a six month old can opener. It does not work. worked well for the first 10 or 20 uses; then the cutting edge just wore out (3-4mos.), so now my money was wasted. No explanation no offer, too bad.

Don't waste money on this one
Ordered in January 2026. Worked good the first few times. Now it just rotates around and around the can but doesn't cut anything. I'm so disappointed because it failed shortly after my return window closed.

Easy to use! No more hand cranking.
If you like the ease of an electric can opener, but don’t have room to store it or don’t want to drag it out when you need to use it, this is for you. I like a handheld can opener, but would get so frustrated trying to use it and turn the handle. This can opener is amazing and so easy to use. Just attach to can and push a button. It starts turning on its own and when it is done it stops. You lift it up and the lid comes off cleanly. It is rechargeable so need to worry about batteries. It tucks away in a drawer nicely. I bought my mom one too. She has arthritis in her hands so thought this would be perfect for her.
