Kodachrome 64 (Type KM 64) is a daylight-balanced color reversal film designed for 35mm still photography, rated at ISO 64/19°. It is based on a multilayer emulsion structure without incorporated dye couplers, relying instead on external dye formation during the proprietary K-14 processing. This architecture contributes to extremely high dye stability and long-term color retention.
The film is characterized by very fine grain, achieved through a low-speed emulsion and tight grain structure, delivering high resolving power and precise edge definition. Color reproduction is notably neutral, with restrained saturation and accurate separation, particularly in reds and skin tones. The contrast curve is moderately steep, favoring strong microcontrast while maintaining controlled highlight roll-off.
Kodachrome 64 exhibits high sharpness due to minimal light scattering within the emulsion layers and the absence of integrated color couplers. Exposure latitude is optimized for transparency projection and high-quality scanning. The film performs best under daylight or electronic flash, maintaining consistent color balance without corrective filtration. Its physical and chemical stability makes it well suited for archival storage and long-term image preservation.
